Dr. Knouf

Paul D. Knouf, M.D.

Dr. Knouf is a Family Practice Physician, practicing in Rockwell City since August 1978. He earned his B.S. from Simpson College, Indianola, IA and his M.D. from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA. Dr. Knouf completed his residency in Family Practice at Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Des Moines. Dr. Knouf is a member of the American Medical Association. When not seeing patients, Dr. Knouf is busy creating scroll saw wood carvings and has donated many of his art work to SMCH. He is also an avid gardener and is a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church Choir.


Dr. Verbik

Family Medicine and Bariatrics
Dr. Verbik serves as the hospital’s Director of Medical Management and practices in Family Practice and Bariatric (weight loss) Medicine. She is one of only two physicians Board Certified as Diplomat of the American Board of Bariatric Medicine in the State of Iowa. She is Board Certified in Family Practice. Dr. Verbik graduated with her M.D. from Christian Medical College, University of Punjab, India. Her postgraduate training is in Pharmacology, which was done at the University of Punjab, India. Her residency in Family Practice was completed at Clarkson Family Medicine, Omaha NE. She’s a member of the American Association of Family Physicians and the America Society of Bariatric Physicians. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, piano music and reading.


Lee Hieb, M.D.

Orthopaedic Surgeon and Fellowship in Spinal Surgery
Dr. Hieb is an Orthopaedic Surgeon at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital. In addition to providing general orthopaedic care, she performs arthroscopy of different joints, fracture care, carpal/cubital tunnel surgery, joint injections and aspirations, pediatric orthopaedic care, and kyphoplasty of the spine. Dr. Hieb is an Iowa native and attended Grinnell College and the University of Iowa. She earned her medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, NY. Before returning to Iowa she ran a successful practice in Yuma, Arizona for 14 years.


Dr. Duncan

Dr. Duncan is a Board Certified Family Physician and offers a full spectrum of family care including Obstetrics, Pediatrics and Adult medicine in Lake City.  Dr. Duncan also focuses on family planning and infertility.  He’s a graduate of Drake University, Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical Center and Via Christi Family Medicine Residency Program.  He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the American Medical Association.  Dr. Duncan and his wife, Marci, have three daughters.  They enjoy cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and golfing.

Dr. Hedges practices Family Medicine with an emphasis on Geriatrics in Lake City. He is a graduate of the Des Moines University of Osteopathic Medical Center and did an Internship at Memorial Osteopathic Hospital in York, P.A. He is Board Certified in Family Practice with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Geriatrics. He is a member of the American Academy Family Physicians, American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians and the Iowa Medical Society. Dr. Hedges and his wife, Harriet, enjoy traveling to Mexico, spending time with their three Dachshunds and volunteering in the community.

Dr. Miller is a Board Certified General Surgeon at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital and offers a full range of surgical services, including cancer surgeries and Gynecology. Dr. Miller graduated from Oregon State University and earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Des Moines University. He also spent five years as a surgical resident at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Prior to coming back to Iowa, Dr. Miller was a member of the faculty at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO., serving as their academic surgeon for more than six years.

Dr. Hornback is a Board Certified Family Physician and offers Obstetrics, Pediatrics and Adult Medicine in Lake City and Lake View. Dr. Hornback began her medical career working as a Certified Medical Assistant and then as a Registered Nurse. She attended Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical Center receiving her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree. Her residency was completed at Iowa Lutheran Family Medicine in Des Moines. She is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Medical Association. When Dr. Hornback is not caring for patients, she is spending time with her family.

Dr. Frate, D.O., practices Internal Medicine and Family Medicine in Lake City. Following four years in the Navy, Dr. Frate attended George Mason University in Fairfax, VA and then went on to medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Lake Erie, PA. He completed four years of residency in Family Medicine and Internal Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA.When Dr. Frate and his wife Wendy have three children. His hobbies include running, fishing and cheering on his alma mater, the George Mason Patriots.

Dr. Smith, D.O. is a board certified general surgeon. He graduated with honors from the University of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines and completed his general surgery residency at Des Moines General Hospital, where he was appointed chief surgery resident from 1998 to 1999. Dr. Smith holds membership to numerous associations including the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons and the Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association. Dr. Smith and his wife have five children and enjoy a variety of outdoor activities including snow skiing, fishing and scuba diving.

Dr. Ronald Cheney is a board certified general surgeon. He graduated from the University of Osteopathic Medicine in Des Moines, where he was named Outstanding Surgical Student in 1996. He completed his general surgery residency at Des Moines General Hospital. Dr. Cheney is a member of numerous associations including the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons and the American Osteopathic Medical Association. Dr. Cheney is married to Dr. Karla Cheney and they have three children. The Cheney’s enjoy many activities including playing sports, traveling and spending time together as a family.


Linda Bettin

Mrs. Bettin sees patients at the McCrary Rost Clinics in Lake City and Lake View.  Her specialty is Family Medicine with an emphasis on women’s health.  She earned her Physician Assistant degree from the University of North Dakota in 1991.  She obtained her Nurse Practitioner degree in 1986 from the University of Texas Women’s Health Center in Dallas, TX and her Registered Nurse qualifications from St. Joseph Nursing School in Sioux City, IA. 

Mrs. Bettin is married with three children and enjoys singing, gardening, reading and audio books.


Nancy Flink

Ms. Flink sees patients at the McCrary Rost Clinic in Lake City. Her specialty is Family Medicine with an emphasis on Gerontology. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of North Dakota, and a Registered Nurse degree from Iowa Central Community College. She belongs to the professional societies of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Iowa Physician’s Assistant Society. When she is not seeing patients, Ms. Flink enjoys
antiques, gardening, cooking and baking.


Rochelle Guess

Ms. Guess specializes in Family Medicine and sees patients in the McCrary Rost Clinics in Gowrie and Dayton. She is a graduate of Grand View College, Drake University, and Clarkson College. Professionally, she is a member of the American Nurses Association, Iowa Nurses Association, and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Rochelle has two children and enjoys music, especially her son’s band, being outdoors, and going on short term mission trips overseas.


Dave McClain

Mr. McClain practices Family Medicine and Gerontology in Rockwell City. He also has special interest in Orthopaedics and Sports medicine. He joined the clinic in 1978. He earned his B.A. from Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, NE and his B.S. and Physician Assistant degrees from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE. He is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Iowa Association of Physician Assistants. In his free time he enjoys fishing, hunting, golfing and riding his bike with his wife, Linda.


Mark Mogensen

Mr. Mogensen practices Family Medicine at the Lake View clinic. He holds an Associate of Medical Laboratory Technician degree from Iowa Central Community College, a Bachelor of Science from Buena Vista University, and a Bachelor of Physician Assistant Studies from Union College in Lincoln, NE. He belongs to the professional societies of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, Nebraska Academy of Physician Assistants, American Society of Clinical Pathologists and John Krebs Society. Mr. Mogensen and his wife have four children and he enjoys fishing, hunting, and golfing. He is also a big fan of the Chicago Cubs.

In 1995, she graduated from the University of Osteopathic Medical Center in Des Moines, with a bachelor of Physician Assistant Studies. Her professional societies include the Iowa Physician Assistant Society, American Academy of Physician Assistants, American Society of Coloposcopy and Clinical Pathology. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, traveling aboard, sewing and reading.
