Safe Haven Facility
Stewart Memorial Community Hospital is designated as a Safe Haven for Newborns. The Iowa Legislature enacted the Safe Haven Act to allow parents to leave a baby two weeks of age or younger to a health care facility without fear of being arrested. The law says a parent or someone acting with the authorization of the parent may drop an infant off at the hospital without being charged with abandonment. Any identifying information given when leaving the infant is kept confidential.
The child will be put in the care of the Department of Human Services. The infant will be placed for adoption.
Parents considering giving up their child through Safe Haven might wish to seek counseling. A toll-free number, 800-369-2229 has been set up to give information on services available in the area.
