Dizziness and Balance Disorders

Lisa Findley, Occupational Therapist at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital, has been trained and practicing Vestibular Rehabilitation since 1999. She works with patients who are experienceing dizziness or vertigo. This may be accompanied by a loss of balance and trouble focusing the eyes properly. Through assessment, Lisa can determine if the patient has Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo or BBPV. An "ear rock" or small piece of calcium carbonate can break loose by a blow to the head, an infection, or the aging process. Many times the reason for the problem is unknown. The "ear rock" is then free floating in the semicircular canal of the inner ear. When the head is moved, the patient will be dizzy, see the room spinning, and may become nauseated. Through a technique called the Canalith Repositioning Technique, Lisa repositions the "ear rock" back where it belongs and the patient usually recovers within a few treatments. She also treats other forms of vestibular problems including balance and eye movement problems. For more information you may contact Lisa at 712-464-4290.
