It's Time to Schedule a Well Child Exam
Don’t delay making your child’s annual exam and scheduled immunizations for the 2021-2022 school year. Back-to-school check-ups, as they are commonly called, are often the only visit some kids have with their medical provider every year. The annual physical gives your provider a chance to give the child a thorough exam that also addresses any emotional, developmental, or social concerns.
It gives the opportunity to address important questions or concerns you have as a parent, including adolescent issues. It is a requirement that all adolescents choosing to play sports in grades 7-12 must have clearance from their provider. This annual exam gives your provider the opportunity to address exercise-specific issues and complete the sports physical form provided by the school.
Vaccinations are a critical part of quality health care and will be addressed at your child’s annual exam. There are vaccines that are required for your child to enter kindergarten as well as grades 7 and 12. However, there are some additional vaccines that are recommended for adolescents. Vaccinating your child is critical for preventing diseases for which adolescents are at increased risk, such as meningococcal disease, Human Papillomavirus ( HPV), and Covid, so it is possible that your adolescent could receive vaccines at their annual visit at any age.
It is a requirement that anyone entering 7th grade receive a Tdap vaccine (tetanus & pertussis booster) & a meningococcal vaccine (meningitis). At age 16-18 a second meningococcal vaccine will be administered. The second dose is required before your child can start 12th grade.
Meningococcal B is another form of meningitis that targets teens. This vaccine is recommended for adolescents starting at age 16 and is a series of two shots given 1-6 months apart.
This year It is recommended anyone 12 years of age and older receive the COVID-19 vaccine. COVID-19 vaccine and other vaccines may be administered on the same day. Depending on the Covid vaccine, one or two shots will be necessary.
