C-PTSD (Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)

Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD) is a condition that can develop after prolonged or repeated exposure to trauma, often in situations where a person feels trapped or unable to escape. This may include experiences such as ongoing abuse, neglect, or chronic stress.

At Stewart Memorial, we provide compassionate, trauma-informed care to help individuals understand their experiences, regain a sense of safety, and build tools for healing and long-term well-being.

Understanding C-PTSD:

  • C-PTSD includes many symptoms of PTSD, along with additional challenges related to emotional regulation, self-image, and relationships.

    Common Symptoms May Include:
    • Difficulty managing emotions, including intense sadness, anger, or anxiety
    • Persistent feelings of shame, guilt, or worthlessness
    • Trouble trusting others or maintaining relationships
    • Flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, or nightmares
    • Feeling disconnected from self or surroundings (dissociation)
    • Ongoing sense of threat, even in safe environments
    How Treatment Can Help:
    • Trauma-informed therapy focused on safety, trust, and empowerment
    • Evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), EMDR, and other trauma-focused therapies
    • Development of coping strategies to manage stress, triggers, and emotional responses
    • Support in rebuilding self-esteem and healthy relationships
