Laboratory Services

Our Laboratory Services Department operates 24/7 to support the healthcare needs of the community—including outpatients, emergency department (ED) patients, and inpatients. Staffed by a dedicated team of Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs), Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS), and skilled support personnel our CLIA-accredited lab plays a vital role in delivering timely, accurate diagnostic results essential for patient care.

We provide a comprehensive range of diagnostic testing, including:

  • Chemistry: Analysis of blood and body fluids to assess organ function and detect imbalances.
  • Hematology: Evaluation of blood cells to diagnose conditions like anemia, infection, and clotting disorders.
  • Coagulation: Testing to assess blood clotting function, critical for managing bleeding disorders and monitoring anticoagulant therapy.
  • Serology: Detection of antibodies to help diagnose infections and immune responses.
  • PCR Microbiology: Advanced molecular testing for rapid identification of infectious organisms.
  • Transfusion Services: Safe preparation and cross-matching of blood products for transfusions.
  • Urinalysis: Examination of urine for signs of infection, kidney disease, and other conditions.

As a critical component of the diagnostic team, our laboratory professionals collaborate closely with physicians and clinical staff to ensure fast, reliable test results that guide effective treatment decisions and improve health outcomes throughout the community.

Lab Services Include:

  • Arterial Blood Gases
  • Blood Typing and Transfusion Services (Blood products are supplied by the Life Serve Blood Center. The entire blood supply comes from volunteer donors. The Blood Center may be reached at 1-800-287-4903.)
  • Cardiac Markers
  • Coagulation Testing (Protime, INR)
  • COVID Antigen Testing and COVID PCR Collection
  • COVID IgG Antibody Collection
  • DOT and Non-DOT Specimen Collection - Urine and Drug Screen: BY APPOINTMENT ONLY Mon - Fri, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm.
  • Hemogram and Differentials
  • Pathology services (analysis of tissue samples) are provided by Iowa Pathology Associates, Des Moines, Iowa.
  • Routine Chemistry Testing
  • Routine Urinalysis
  • Serology Testing
  • Specialized tests not performed at Stewart Memorial are referred to Iowa Pathology Labs. Specimens are picked up daily by courier and results are sent back to our lab by computer.
  • Thyroid and Prostate Testing
