Play Therapy
Play Therapy is an evidence-based mental health approach that helps children express thoughts, emotions, and experiences through play rather than words. At Stewart Memorial, trained therapists create a safe, supportive environment where children can use toys, art, and creative activities to process challenges, build coping skills, and work through emotional or behavioral concerns.
How Play Therapy Works:
- Sessions use play as a form of communication to help children express what they may not be able to verbalize
Two primary approaches:
- Directive Play Therapy: Therapist-guided activities focused on specific goals or skill-building
- Non-Directive Play Therapy: Child-led sessions that encourage exploration, self-expression, and emotional release
Techniques may include sand tray play, storytelling, role-playing, drawing, and other creative methods
Benefits of Play Therapy
- Helps children process trauma, anxiety, depression, and life changes
- Improves emotional regulation and the ability to express feelings
- Builds social skills and strengthens relationships with family and peers
- Encourages problem-solving, confidence, and healthy coping strategies
Play therapy is especially effective for children experiencing behavioral challenges, major life transitions, or emotional distress. With guidance from trained professionals, children can safely explore their experiences and develop skills that support long-term emotional well-being.
