At Stewart Memorial Community Hospital, our Rehabilitation Services Department specialize in you. Our highly trained occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech-language therapists, and rehab technicians strive to provide exceptional care to every patient, every day. We offer a wide array of services and cutting-edge treatments to our patients and community to help them live healthy and fulfilling lives. The Macke Family Rehabilitation Services department renovation provides a state-of-the-art facility and an unprecedented level of service to the community.
Do I need a referral for therapy services from my doctor?
Most patients are referred to therapy by their medical provider. However, many private insurances allow direct access to physical and occupational therapy without a referral from their doctor.
If you’re interested in “direct access,” check with your insurance provider or contact the Rehab Services department for more information. Direct access is ideal for those familiar with their therapy needs and without medical concerns requiring provider evaluation.
Whether referred by a provider or through direct access, our therapists will share your therapy information with your provider unless you request otherwise.
Will my insurance cover therapy services?
Therapy service coverage depends on your insurance plan. Most traditional insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid plans provide therapy coverage, but vary in plan benefits. The Rehab Services department will verify your insurance benefits prior to your first appointment to ensure that you have coverage to avoid any unexpected issues. As a hospital outpatient service, our services do typically apply towards a patient’s annual deductible until met. As a result, we encourage patients to contact their insurance provider to better understand their insurance benefits if they have questions.
Community Service
South Central Calhoun School District
The Rehabilitation Services Department at Stewart Memorial partners with the SCC school district to provide access to preventative and injury screening services to area student athletes to keep them in the game. Each year, we are proud to offer the following community services to the SCC district:
- Concussion baseline testing via ImPACT computer testing for student athletes
- Sideline athletic training services for high injury risk sports
- Onsite injury screening clinic at the high school and middle school
Calhoun County Public Health
Our therapists instruct education sessions for Calhoun County Public Health’s Matter of Balance program to support our area seniors. Promoting activity and healthy lifestyles is a priority of both organizations, which has resulted in a long-term partnership.

Iowa allows for direct access where patients can come directly to physical and occupational therapy without a referral. This does vary by insurance so be sure to ask our front desk staff if your insurance allows direct insurance. If not, getting a referral from your provider can arranged.
Most insurance plans cover therapy, but coverage limits, co-pays, and visit caps vary. Rehab therapy services provided at Stewart Memorial Hospital and Clinics are billed through the hospital as an outpatient service. Please note that some insurance policies apply hospital outpatient services toward your deductible. We encourage you to check with your insurance provider to understand your policy coverage and financial responsibility.
Typically 2–3 times per week, but this depends on your condition and provider recommendations.
Duration varies based on condition, goals, and progress. It may range from a few weeks to several months.
We are happy to accommodate your requests and will offer you options based on therapist availability.
You will meet your therapist who will visit with you about your medical issue then will complete a series of tests and evaluations to determine the cause of your issue. They will then discuss a plan of action going forward to address your issue and work towards the goals you are hoping to achieve.
