The Surgery Services Team at Stewart Memorial Hospital and Clinics has been selected as the recipient of the organization’s third-quarter Team Award after receiving two nominations recognizing the team’s support of patients, families and fellow team members.

The nominations highlighted the Surgery Services Team’s ability to respond with flexibility and kindness during unexpected circumstances, while also creating positive experiences for patients and families during surgery and recovery.

One nomination recognized the team for their support during a particularly challenging situation involving a critically ill newborn. Following a cesarean section, the newborn required continuous respiratory support and could not be transferred because of weather conditions. The NICU transport team was unable to arrive until approximately 12 hours after the baby’s birth. Because the mother and newborn could not be separated during that time, the Surgery Services department became a temporary space for the newborn’s care while also allowing the mother and family to remain close.

Despite the unusual circumstances and the extended use of their department, the Surgery Services Team welcomed the situation without complaint. Team members regularly checked in with the care team to see if anything was needed and helped provide a supportive environment for the family during an already stressful experience.

“Their show of compassion and support during such a stressful time for both the staff and the patients meant so much,” Stevens Steven’s Obstetrics Director wrote in her nomination.

The second nomination, submitted by Brittney McClendon, highlighted the team’s efforts to help a young patient feel more comfortable during a surgery experience.

After the child returned from having ear tubes placed, he experienced anxiety, throat discomfort, difficulty breathing and vomiting. Members of the Surgery Services Team stayed attentive to his needs, speaking calmly with him, providing medication for nausea and a sore throat, and helping him feel more at ease.

The team also found a way to bring some fun into the experience. A staff member allowed the child to ride the power-wheel Bronco out of the holding area, something his family said helped make the hospital experience less frightening.

Together, the nominations demonstrate the many ways the Surgery Services Team contributes to the experiences of patients and families at Stewart Memorial. Whether responding to an unexpected situation or helping a child feel safe during a routine procedure, the team consistently looks for ways to provide reassurance, support and a welcoming environment.

“We are proud to recognize the Surgery Services Team for the way they show up for patients, families and one another,” said Linn Block, CEO. “These nominations are a wonderful reflection of the care and support they provide every day.”

The Team Award recognizes a team at Stewart Memorial Hospital and Clinics whose teamwork demonstrates a meaningful impact on patients, families, coworkers or the community.
