Stewart Memorial Hospital and Clinics is proud to recognize Shyla Drost, RN, for her recent DAISY Award nomination, honoring the meaningful impact she made for a patient and their family during their time at Stewart Memorial.
The nomination came after Shyla helped create an unforgettable anniversary celebration for the Bean family. While having a spouse in the hospital can be a challenging experience, Shyla learned that the couple would be celebrating their 71st wedding anniversary during their stay and wanted to help make the milestone special.
With the help of several Stewart Memorial team members, Shyla organized a surprise candlelight lunch in the family room. The celebration included the couple’s favorite meal, flowers, and gifts to mark their 71 years together.
The thoughtful gesture turned a difficult circumstance into a cherished memory. The family shared that the candle and gifts from the celebration now have a special place in their home, and the story of that day continues to be shared often.
“Having a spouse in the hospital can be hard on any day, but celebrating your 71st anniversary in a hospital was quite the opposite and couldn’t have been any more memorable,” the family shared. “Shyla’s idea meant the world to both of them.”
The DAISY Award recognizes nurses who make an extraordinary difference through the care and support they provide to patients and families. Shyla’s nomination highlights the importance of creating meaningful moments and supporting families during some of life’s most significant experiences.
