Volunteer Spotlight: Jan Snyder

If you’ve spent any time at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital, chances are you’ve seen Jan Snyder’s warm smile. She’s been a dedicated volunteer for what she jokingly calls “just forever.” Jan’s history with the hospital goes way back. She even helped out in the original gift shop when it was still in the hospital’s first main lobby.
These days, you’ll usually find Jan in the Heart Strings Gift Shoppe, where she loves getting to know people she might not meet otherwise. “Just meeting different people,” she says, is what she enjoys most about volunteering. Along with her time at the hospital, she’s also active in her church, especially in programs that involve kids.
When asked about a favorite memory, Jan didn’t point to one specific moment. Instead, she talked about the little things. “It’s the happiness you see on people’s faces when you’re friendly, and they’re friendly right back,” she said with a smile.
Outside the hospital, Jan stays busy with her family. She treasures time with her grandkids and great grandkids, especially when they have sleepovers full of fun and giggles. She also volunteers through a statewide program, doing things like coloring with kids and making bird feeders out of peanut butter and pinecones.
Her advice to anyone thinking about volunteering? “Volunteering doesn’t make cents, but it’s worth it.” (Yes, cents with a “c” – it doesn’t pay, but the reward is in the giving.)
We’re lucky to have Jan as part of the Stewart Memorial volunteer family. Her kindness, sense of humor, and dedication brighten our days. Thank you, Jan!
