Community Wellness & Sports Performance

Senior Strong

The physical and occupational therapists at SMCH identified a common thread of strength and balance loss with our older patients receiving therapy services over the years. Many of these patients found themselves in a cycle of coming in for therapy due to weakness or a recent fall, improving, and then declining once therapy ended due to reduced activity again. To assist our community members in maintaining strength, balance, and active lifestyles outside of therapy, Senior Strong was developed by Kay Crabb, Functional Aging Exercise Specialist and physical therapist.

Senior Strong is offered in an 8-week group session format for a total of 16 classes. Sessions take place in the new SMCH Fitness Center. Senior Strong runs throughout the year, so check with the Rehab Services Department to see when the next class is scheduled to begin. Call (712) 464-4244.

Power and Performance

The SMCH athletic trainers and sports physical therapists have teamed up to design sports performance programs geared towards improving performance and preventing injuries for our student athletes.

  • Individual and small group sessions are offered seasonally. These sessions are geared towards the individual athlete’s performance goals and specific physical needs.
  • Team Power is a “train the trainer”-style program geared towards school and club teams who want to power up their performance and reduce team injuries.  Our sports professionals work with the coaches to design a power program specific to the goals and needs of their athletes.  After the power program is created, our professionals train the team staff to be able to safely execute it with their athletes. Program updates and training is offered periodically by our sports professionals to ensure the team needs are met and the program remains fresh. Team Power is a dynamic program that does not rely on extensive weight equipment to provide results making it ideal for teams who have space limitations or practice in multiple locations.

Community Service

South Central Calhoun School District:
The Rehabilitation Services Department at SMCH partners with the SCC school district to provide access to preventative and injury screening services to area student athletes to keep them in the game. Each year, we are proud to offer the following community services to the SCC district:

o   Concussion baseline testing via ImPACT computer testing for student athletes
o   Sideline athletic training services for high injury risk sports
o   Onsite injury screening clinic at the high school and middle school

Calhoun County Public Health:
Our SMCH therapists instruct education sessions for Calhoun County Public Health’s Matter of Balance program to support our area seniors. Promoting activity and healthy lifestyles is a priority of both organizations which has resulted in a long-term partnership.

Elderbridge Agency on Aging:
Our SMCH physical therapist, Kay Crabb, has instructed fitness/education sessions for the Elderbridge Agency’s Stepping On program to support our area seniors in engaging in safe and active lifestyles.
